Where we work

We are grateful and proud to work in and around Sacramento on some amazing houses from very Traditional to minimally Modern.   Our work usually comes to us through referrals from Architects, Designers, Engineers and Previous Clients who trust us with their clients, colleagues and friends.

Cities where we have worked include: Sacramento, Davis, West Sacramento, Kenwood, Walnut Grove, Clarksburg, Land Park, East Sacramento, Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Folsom, Sloughhouse, El Dorado Hills, Shingle Springs, Auburn, Roseville, Granite Bay, Lincoln, Loomis

While we don’t think per square foot (psf) costing is accurate, its a starting point.  We have completed projects  from $200 psf to over $600 psf.  Mid range costs for our builds average $250 psf under roof or $300 psf for conditioned area only.

It’s all about the clients wants, needs and budgets.  It is our opinion that there are a handful of quality custom builders in the Sacramento area, who given the chance to formally bid a complete set of plans and specs, will in the end have almost identical costs.  And while we will not say we are best, we would like to think we are in that handful who can TRULY do custom.

“The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person doing it”   Chinese proverb

It takes a great deal of patience, ingenuity and skill to make some of these details come together, budget or not,  and that’s where we believe we excel.

Why we build

Because we love what we do.

And what we do is simply BUILD amazing custom homes.  remodels too.

Balance priorities between form, function and costs

Unleash talented and skilled trades

Involve our client in all decision-making processes

Listen by design then lead by example

Develop lasting relationships

Each new project is an opportunity. We diligently approach with open and honest communication.

This has earned us a reputation for reliability and quality construction, providing us the good fortune to share our work through word of mouth.

Who we are

Founded and incorporated in 1977 by Carl Meloney.

“people doubt what you say, but believe what you do, ” Lewis Cass

A philosophy Carl embodied.

Carl had high expectations and it not only applied to every detail in a house but also to every employee and subcontractor.  His business model has become ours when he retired.

Carl Meloney, Founder 1977

Carl retired in 2008, spent some time on the sea, restoring boats if you can imagine, but has gone home to Connecticut, where he continues to build with a passion for a few lucky friends, family and neighbors.

Carl you crazy man, we love and miss you!

Kirk Todd

employee since 1987, owner since 2005

Kirk met Carl through a friend and began part time as a laborer while attending Sacramento State.  He stayed on full time after college because he enjoyed the challenges and rewards of building custom homes.  Kirk was a scratch golfer back in the day, and can still play a mean game, but when pressed he would rather be building than golfing.   Kirk brings his years of knowledge as a carpenter to the team.

He will tell you to stand back at the end of a day and say, “Hey, I built that,” has been fulfilling.

Kristy Lingner

employee since 2003, owner since 2005

Kristy was always quick to grasp ideas and mechanically minded.  This lead her to a drafting class as a high school freshman, and ultimately a B.A. in Interior Design from Sacramento State.  In 1999, while working for a local architect, Kristy drew plans for a house Carl built and immediately loved his enthusiasm for construction. 4 years later, while working for the State of California, their paths crossed. Shortly after Carl offered her an opportunity with River City Builders, Inc. and she jumped at the chance.  With her mechanical inclination and can do attitude building is a natural extension of her talents.
